A restaurant with rooms to stay
With the garden terrace facing the Tye (the village green), with the towering Cathedral of the South Downs (the village church of St Andrews) and the stunning backdrop of the South Downs themselves, this is a special location and above the restaurant is a place from which to enjoy all that this area has to offer- as well as the distinctive Moonrakers welcome.
The rooms at Moonrakers consist of a suite of main bedroom, bathroom and sitting room, all with views across to the Downs through leaf clad mullion windows. The building itself is over 500 years old and the high beamed ceilings, wooden doors and fittings, and situation alongside the medieval High Street are gently combined with comforts from the modern age, and a style of service that is cutting edge.
Alfriston is often described, with justification, as one of the most picturesque villages in Sussex. It is seen as the gateway to the new National Park sitting in the centre of the Cuckmere Valley. The village has many tea shops and Inns and some lovely local shops including a fine antiques shop, kitchen shop, and one of the best bookshops in Britain. The village is a chance to get away from the everyday, there is something magical about the landscape and the setting that has inspired artists and writers.
At Moonrakers you can explore, or simply take some time to take in the scenery and the atmosphere.
Alfriston is a natural starting point for exploring the many footpaths that pick their way through the local countryside and, of course the South Downs Way. We have a collection of local maps and walking suggestions. Charleston farmhouse is nearby and even closer the decorated village church of St Michaels at Berwick. Other attractions for younger visitors include the brilliant DrusillaԳ Zoo and Middle Farm. Virgina WoolfԳ Rodmell is within a short drive.
Glyndebourne is some six miles distant and the major towns of Eastbourne (5 miles) Lewes (5 miles) and Brighton (16 miles) are all within easy reach. The dramatic coastline of the Seven Sisters can be most easily accessed via Seaford which is just two miles down the road.
The accommodation above the restaurant consists of a beautiful king size bedroom, with a separate sitting room that can provide ancillary sleeping arrangements if needed for other family members. Books on the local area (courtesy of Much Ado Books) sit on the table; there is a DVD player with a library of titles, free wi fi access, luxury mini-bar, and tea and coffee facilities. There is no tv.The Moonrakers Suite offers a seamless transition from the dining rooms downstairs to the rooms upstairs where local artistsӠwork, creature comforts and the same attention to detail as elsewhere are in evidence.
At weekends the rooms are only available in conjunction with a dinner booking. For breakfast we serve a breakfast tray in your room with fresh coffee, teas, fruit juice with local breads.
